How to buy US stocks from India

As of 20 October 2026, there are three common routes. Open an international brokerage account and send money under RBI's Liberalised Remittance Scheme, up to USD 250,000 a year. Use a broker in GIFT City, also under that scheme. Or put rupees into an Indian mutual fund or ETF that tracks a US index.

  1. An international brokerage account, through an Indian app. Your bank sends the money abroad under RBI's Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS), with your PAN and Form A2. You then own the US shares directly. Counts towards the USD 250,000 yearly limit. TCS of 20% is collected on LRS money above ₹10 lakh in a year and set against your income tax.
  2. A broker in GIFT City (IFSC, Gandhinagar). RBI has allowed LRS money to go to GIFT City since 2021, and since July 2024 for every purpose LRS allows. Still LRS: the same limit and the same TCS rules apply.
  3. An Indian mutual fund or ETF that tracks a US index, such as the Nasdaq 100 or the S&P 500. You pay in rupees from an Indian account; no money is sent abroad in your name. SEBI caps how much Indian funds may invest abroad, so some of these funds stop taking new money at times. An ETF can trade above the value of what it holds; check its price against its NAV.

We name no app or broker and rank none: which one suits you depends on fees, currency spread and service, which change often. The questions at the end of this page cover tax, currency and timings.

Questions Indians ask about US stocks

Can Indians invest in US stocks?

Yes. A resident Indian may send up to USD 250,000 abroad in each April to March financial year under RBI's Liberalised Remittance Scheme, and buying foreign shares is a permitted use. Travel, gifts and education abroad use the same limit.

Is tax collected when I send money abroad to invest in US stocks?

Yes, above ₹10 lakh in a financial year. From 1 April 2026, tax collected at source (TCS) is 20% on LRS money above ₹10 lakh for purposes other than education or medical treatment. It counts as tax paid, so it is set against your income tax or refunded.

How are US stocks taxed for Indian residents?

The US withholds 25% of dividends paid to Indian residents under the India-US tax treaty, and does not tax a non-resident's share gains. India taxes both: gains on shares held over 24 months at 12.5%, shorter gains and dividends at your slab rate, with credit for US tax through Form 67.

What time does the US stock market open in India?

At 7:00 pm India time while the US is on daylight saving time (until 1 November 2026), and at 8:00 pm in the US winter. It closes at 1:30 am or 2:30 am India time.

Can I invest in US stocks without sending money abroad?

Yes. Indian mutual funds and NSE-listed ETFs that track the Nasdaq 100 or the S&P 500 are bought in rupees. SEBI caps how much Indian funds may invest abroad, so some stop taking new money at times. Check an ETF's price against its NAV first.

Does the rupee affect returns on US stocks?

Yes. Your return in rupees is the share's return in dollars plus the change in the dollar against the rupee. A weaker rupee adds to it, a stronger rupee takes away. This page shows US dollars only.

Why is there no US dividend stocks list here?

We could not yet work out a current dividend yield we trust for every company: our filings data misses or disagrees for many large payers, and some foreign companies report in their own currency. We will add the list once the yield checks out.

Does this page say which US stock to buy?

No. Every list is a fact with its rule printed beside it. Sector Alpha gives no tips, price targets or analyst ratings, and is not a SEBI-registered research analyst.
