What is the Dow Jones?
The Dow Jones Industrial Average, or the Dow, follows 30 large US companies picked by a committee at S&P Dow Jones Indices. It is weighted by share price, so a $500 share counts ten times a $50 share. It leaves out transport and utility companies. On 19 October 2026 it closed at 51,966.03.
- Who runs it: S&P Dow Jones Indices.
- How many: 30 companies, always.
- How it is weighted: by share price, not by company size. A stock split lowers a company's weight.
- What it leaves out: transport and utility companies, which have their own Dow averages.
- A fund that copies it: DIA in the US.
